What is Cold Process Soap?

Cold-process soap is a traditional soap-making method where oils or fats are combined with sodium hydroxide (lye) at room temperature, resulting in a chemical reaction called saponification that takes up to 48 hours. Saponification is the chemical reaction that transforms oils and fats into soap and glycerin when combined with lye. Cold-process soap typically uses plant-based or animal-based oils/fats, sodium hydroxide (lye), water, and optional additions like essential oils, herbs, and colorants.

Cold process soap offers several benefits, including enhanced skin hydration due to retained natural oils and glycerin, a gentle approach to cleansing, and the potential for a more sustainable and eco-friendly choice due to the use of natural, biodegradable ingredients. Many of  the benefits of cold process soap are:

Moisturizing: Cold process soap retains the natural glycerin from the oils used in the process, which acts as a humectant, drawing moisture into the skin and keeping it hydrated.
Gentle on Skin: The cold process method preserves the natural oils and butters, making the soap gentle and less likely to strip the skin of its natural oils, which can lead to dryness and irritation.
Suitable for Sensitive Skin: The natural ingredients and gentle nature of cold process soap make it a good option for people with sensitive skin, as it's less likely to cause irritation or allergic reactions.
Rich in Natural Ingredients: Cold process soap is made with natural fats, oils, butters, and other plant-based ingredients, which can nourish and benefit the skin.
Preservation of Natural Fragrances: The cold process method allows for the preservation of natural fragrances from essential oils and other botanical additives, which can be dissipated when heat is used.
Creamy Lather: Cold process soap creates a rich and creamy lather that can be a luxurious and enjoyable part of the bathing experience.
Reduced Water Pollution: Cold process soap making often uses natural ingredients that are less likely to pollute waterways compared to soaps made with synthetic chemicals.
Zero-Waste Potential: Cold process soap can be a great addition to a zero-waste lifestyle, as it lasts a long time and doesn't require packaging.
Longer Shelf Life: Cold process soap can have a longer shelf life than hot process soap, as the curing process helps to stabilize the soap.
Natural and Pure: Cold process soap is made with natural ingredients and without harsh chemicals, making it a pure and natural choice.
